Adding HR Core Competencies to Your Business
If you are thinking about creating an HR department in your growing business, you will need to look for an HR person familiar with a number of these key HR competency areas: total compensation and benefits, recruiting, performance management, organization development, occupational health and safety, wellness, employee motivation, communications, information systems, administration, and training & development. Depending on the size of your organization, you may need more than one person. I would suggest you allow 1 HR person for every 100 employees if you have the budget. The larger your organization, the more you will find that one or more of these competency areas begins to overshadow others to a point where you may need an expert in just one area in order to reach your organizational effectiveness. If you hire right in the beginning, your new HR expert will easily be able to advise on the support staffing needs.
From Wikipedia: Human resources is the name of the function within an organization charged with the overall responsibility for implementing strategies and policies relating to the management of individuals (i.e. the human resources). This function title is often abbreviated to the initials 'HR'. My goal for this blog is to share tips and advice on all things HR. Whether you are an employer needing direction, or an employee in need of employment advice, I can address both.
